A love for animals has been part of Shop3D.ca’s story from the beginning; Hailey, the owners’ dog and first “employee,” even held the honorary title of HR. Dogs in the office became a staple of company culture, with the team’s pets frequently featured on social media and shared in the #petpics channel. So when Shop3D.ca sought a unique, yet practical, promotional item, it didn’t take long to land on the perfect idea: a calendar that combined pets and printers.
Goals
- Develop a promotional item that is novel, useful and the customer will re-engage with
- Feature brands/products to drive sales and get sponsorship to support printing costs
- Get the most value out of the product as possible
Challenges
We were also in a unique position to make this a reality. One of Shop3D.ca’s owners was formerly a pet photographer and we had a photo studio (with all the equipment) in house. Thus, the biggest challenges we faced were logistical: procuring enough pets for 12 months, getting them scheduled over two shoot days and ensuring that the animals could enter/leave without interacting with each other to reduce stress. Also, we wanted ducks.
The second biggest challenge was working with a junior team with little photo editing experience. One way we addressed the large amount of post-processing was choosing a very simple style, focusing on single colour backgrounds with simple shapes to add texture and avoid the look of animals “floating”.
Highlights
To encourage the customer re-engaging with the calendar we had a special promotion available that unlocked monthly. To access the page, customers needed to use the unique QR code or URL to view the deal and get the coupon code.
We included open-house, and planned promotion/event dates in the calendar and highlighted Canadian holidays.
